Tube feeders are the most popular type of feeder we sell because they are easy to use, fill, hang and birds love them.
Originally developed in the 1960’s, they took off in popularity because of their simple, efficient design. Tube feeders can hold and dispense almost any type of bird seed and are attractive to almost every type of bird.
Better tube feeders are made with tough materials like Polycarbonate tubes & aluminum perches, to prevent destruction by squirrels. The clear tube also makes it easy to see if the feeder needs refilling.
These feeders can also take the harshest elements, so they are ideal for winter feeding. Don’t worry - birds do not have sweat glands on their feet so they will not freeze to the metal perches!
Birds easily land on the perches, and can easily see the seed inside the tube, making food easy to access. Most tubes are made to attract a wide variety of birds, but we also sell specialty tube feeders, including many types of squirrel-proof and finch feeders.
Choosing a Tube Feeder
There are many types of tube feeders on the market. They range from small ones (approximately 3” diameter x 10” tall) to large ones (approximately 4.5” in diameter x 24” tall.) The size of the tube feeder you choose depends on how often you feed the birds and how often you want to refill the tube feeder.
The actual tube itself also comes in different styles and materials with some having several perches along the length of the tube and others having none at all. The birds you would like to attract to your backyard should determine what seed to buy. The seed you choose dictates what tube feeder you will purchase. The reverse is also true. You can choose a tube feeder based on size and the way it looks. This will determine what seed you can fill it with and the seed will determine what birds will feed off the tube feeder.
Standard Tube Feeder
This is a typical tube feeder and is the most versatile with respect to the variety of seed you can fill it with and the birds that the seed will attract. It has a clear polycarbonate tube with large holes and several perches.
Peanut Tube Feeder
This tube feeder is designed specifically for whole peanuts that are shelled. The tube is made of a wire mesh and the mesh openings are quite large. If you put typical birdseed mix of sunflower, millet, crushed corn and peanuts in this feeder, the seed would fall through the mesh openings. This seed and tube feeder combination will attract titmice, nuthatches, jays, woodpeckers and chickadees.

Where to place your tube feeder
Tube feeders can be placed almost anywhere, hanging from a tree or mounted on a pole. We also offer accessories like seed trays to catch seed that birds drop, and to provide a comfortable platform for larger birds like cardinals & jays.
To keep squirrels away, remember that your feeder must be 10 feet away from any tree, bush, deck railing or furniture that the squirrels can use as a launching pad. This includes the ground! There are accessories that we sell, such as baffles that could assist in keeping squirrels away.
