Most wooden feeders are made to attract a wide variety of birds, although some specialty feeders exist – like our upside-down suet feeder. Our wooden feeders are made to withstand harsh elements & years of service. Most are made exclusively of kiln-dried natural cedar, with zinc chromate screws for durability. Hinges are full-length anodized aluminum and the copper tops are 12oz weight. All paints are marine grade.
Although there are specialty wooden feeders (like suet feeders), wooden feeders generally come in two forms: Tray Feeders and Hopper-style feeders. The main difference between these two styles is the closed versus open architecture of the feeder.
Both feeders can hold most types of bird seed and the hopper-styled feeders may hold more seed that their tube feeder counterparts.
Because of the flexibility of wood, you will find more selection of wooden feeders than tube feeders in terms of style, color and configuration. For example, you will find cedar shingled roofs like the round Lazy Hill tray feeder shown above, or a green painted roof shown on the rectangular shaped hopper feeder.
You may also find different types of feeders combined into one such as the hopper and suet feeder shown to the right, or the combination hopper and tray feeder also shown to the right (Copper Top Mega-Hopper.)
Where to place your wooden feeder
Wooden feeders can be placed almost anywhere, hanging from a tree or mounted on a pole. We also offer accessories like seed trays to catch seed that birds drop, and to provide a comfortable platform for larger birds like cardinals & jays.
To keep squirrels away, remember that your feeder must be 10 feet away from any tree, bush, deck railing or furniture that the squirrels can use as a launching pad. This includes the ground! There are accessories that we sell, such as baffles that could assist in keeping squirrels away.
